The Land of the Free

Today was lovely. We relaxed a little, did some chores, sat around at the pool for hours, and had a wonderful Mexican feast. We played games on the peaceful screened in porch with the sound of the ice cream churn motor whirring in our ears (It never did get all the way done; we're blaming the fat-free half-n-half!) and shot off lame fireworks in the unusually cool darkness.

For a while at the pool Alisyn and I talked about the Revolutionary War. We talked about how terribly long it was; eight full years. We talked about the fact that for so many years after the war the founding fathers weren't even sure that they had done the right thing. From our vantage point over 200 years later it is easy for us to see the power in the words they wrote and the brilliance in the government they established.

The United States of America certainly has it's problems. (Including fat free half-n-half.) And sometimes it seems that all people do is talk about the problems.

So tonight I am celebrating the greatness that is the USofA. The greatness of leaders past who had the clarity of vision and the inspiration to see the possibility of something more. The greatness of leaders who have lead this country through the intervening centuries to where we are today. And the greatness of leaders today who have dedicated themselves to dealing with the problems we now face.

I'm grateful to live in the land of the free.

Let freedom ring...
