Cindy Lynn and the Blue Pool

The other day I was looking for a picture of me with Cindy Lynn for a project I'm working on.  I knew that we had at least one picture together on our trip to Maui in 2006, so I hooked up my new and wonderful hard drive (that now contains all of my precious digital pictures!!) and searched through the pictures from that trip.  We loved Maui so much, and it was wonderful to look at the beautiful pictures again.

Cindy Lynn and I had a wonderful adventure/hike on our trip together.  I had assumed that Russ and I would have the same experience, but when we went last year the guide book no longer included information about this hike.  Instead it said that because of some property disputes it was no longer safe for tourists to be in this area.

Our adventure started on the road to Hana.  (More about the road to Hana on a future "catching up" post.)  We wanted to hike to Blue Pools, a waterfall that was right at the edge of the island.  First we drove for a long time down a narrow country road.  The high point of the road (or perhaps the low point?) was crossing a small stream.  No bridge--we just drove through it.  There were poles on either side of the stream that were painted red and white.  A sign on top of the pole read "If water is up to the red line do not drive across the stream."  That was exciting!

It was also amazing to see the "backyard" of one of the homes along the road.

(The first picture was taken on our way down the road, the second after our hike adventure.
Notice how much more water is coming from the waterfall just a few hours later.)

After driving for several more miles we saw a sign advertising parking in a family's yard for $2.  We parked the our rental car (a lovely convertible--which was where our enthusiasm with convertibles started) and started walking.  We knew that we needed to walk toward the ocean and then cross a river.  Like I said, this was an Adventure!

When we got to the end of the road we figured it was time to go across the river.

Once we were across the river we climbed over big stones

until we rounded the corner and saw this.

It was spectacular.  Really and truly amazing.  A tall and beautiful waterfall falling into a lovely pool, almost completely enclosed by high cliffs around it.

The water from the pool overflowed and ran out through and over the large rocks into the pounding surf.  I could see why the Hawaiians would think this a sacred spot.

Cindy Lynn and I sat and enjoyed the magic of this place until it was time to leave.  (We wanted all of the river crossing, hiking, and stream-driving to be done while it was still fully daylight!)

I'm so glad that Cindy Lynn and I had the opportunity to experience this adventure together, and that we'll always have the memory of this magic place.

Cheating

Book club is this Thurday night.  (hooray!)

By Thursday night I am supposed to have read 250 pages in this book:

I have been reading it for several months now, but I am still only on page 170.  (Though I must say that 1 page in this book is like 5 pages in many other books.  These are dense pages!)

The truth of the matter is that I have not been entirely faithful to Rough Stone Rolling...because I'm so addicted to Mt. Everest now!  Yes, it's the truth.  I cannot stop reading books and watching dvds about Mt. Everest.

We've watched:

I watched the first one with Russ, because I was worried that it would be too intense for the little kids.  (And it was intense.  At least until we read that they blizzard scenes were filmed at the parking lot of a ski resort in Utah.  Then it wasn't quite as intense!)

I watched the discovery channel series with the little kids, and we loved it.  Every time we had laundry that needed to be folded we were excited to be able to watch another episode.  We knew the climbers names and challenges and we were rooting for them all along the way.  And at the end of every episode I asked the question, "What kind of people climb Mt. Everest?" and they gave the mandatory answer.  "Stupid people."

I've also read:

What can I say?  I'm hooked on Everest!

Undying Gratitude

In the beginning, there was me.

With three babies.

Cindy Lynn was an amazing help.
Jason tried to help too,
as did Josh.
Russ was there for the nights and weekends.  And of course he was amazing.

But it was still overwhelming.
And we were exhausted.
Things were going to pot.  (Sorry--just couldn't resist that picture!)

It's been long enough that I don't remember how it started--but sometime after the triplets turned one Brenda started babysitting for me every Friday.  It was bliss.  For one day every week I could escape from my house and my life.  I took Cindy Lynn to her violin lesson and slept on a bench outside the door while she played.  I did the grocery shopping.  I have no idea what else that I did.  What I do remember is that while I was gone Brenda was playing with my kids, taking them for walks in the neighborhood (with her baby too!), and still smiling at the end of the day.  I would come back from my escape a little refreshed and ready to take on my job again.

Brenda and her husband became dear friends.  During the infamous ice storm of 2002 they were one of the families that came and stayed at our house for a week.  She taught us to play Speed Scrabble, a game we still play all of the time.

Brenda kept coming even after she had another baby.  She would walk down to the park with all 5 kids using the triplet stroller, a backpack, and holding one hand.  It was unbelievable.
Brenda and Peter babysat for us when we took the older kids to Disney World to celebrate having survived the triplet's first 18 months.  They babysat again when Russ and I escaped on a short cruise the next year.

We were so sad when Peter graduated from Law School and they moved.  (Though we realize that they were happy to have more of an income than the babysitting gig!)
A few weeks ago Brenda emailed to say that they were going to be in town this weekend.  We were so excited to see them again.  Russ made them mexican food and we played speed scrabble, just like old times.

I will never be able to thank Brenda enough for the service she gave me.  I learned after she left that not many people were interested in babysitting triplets, and it was a while before I found another babysitter.  Thankfully, she had gotten me through the roughest time.

I hope that one day I will be able to make the kind of difference in someone else's life that Brenda made in mine.  And I also hope that there is someone there for her like she was for me.

I will be thanking Brenda forever.

Foggy Morning

In our old house the master bedroom was on the front of the house and so we had blinds on the windows.  In this house our bedroom is on the back of the house and so we don't have any blinds.  Originally I thought that perhaps the natural daylight would help me get up in the morning.  Hah.  But I love being able to look outside as I'm waking up--it's always beautiful out there.

Yesterday morning's fog was exciting enough to get me out of bed so that I could take some pictures.  (Not in my pajamas, if you're wondering.  Not this time, anyway!)  I think I got a lovely shot of the last of the fog.

Signs of Spring

After what is officially the 6th coldest Durham winter in recorded history, I am ready for spring.  The sunny skies on Tuesday were like a teaser of what's to come, and I can't wait.  Let me say that again.  I.  Can't.  Wait!

I noticed that we have a few little flowers blooming in our front yard, so I pulled out the purse cam to see if I could get some pretty pictures.  I think it's going to be a flower-ful year!

What Did Your Purse Get For Christmas???

For about 2 months I have felt like my brain has gone AWOL.  First there was all of the fun and excitement and fatigue of Cindy Lynn & Mahon's post-Christmas visit.  Then there was the sinus infection that started about the same time.  And on top of everything else, a couple of months ago the manufacturer of my thyroid medicine changed the fillers in the medication and didn't think it was a big deal---well it has been a huge deal to my body.

Last week I finally gave in and went to the doctor to get an antibiotic and a different kind of thyroid medicine.  I felt worse for the next few days, but I finally feel like I might survive and that my brain might return.

In the next few weeks I'm going to try doing some catching up posts from things from 2009 that I never got around to.  Maybe in 2010 I'll be more on top of things.  But probably not!

-------

Because Cindy Lynn and Mahon came to visit the day after Christmas I never really blogged about Christmas.  I wanted to at least tell you about what I got for Christmas.  Or rather, what my purse got for Christmas.

Yep--a tiny pink camera.  For a long time now I have wished that I had a camera that was small enough to take with me wherever I went.  My regular camera isn't as big as a digital SLR, but it's still not going to fit comfortably in my purse.  I knew that getting a second camera wasn't the smartest financial decision ever, but I figured that if I used all of my birthday and Christmas money towards it then I felt ok about it.

I have loved having a camera in my purse.  Because of my new toy I can take pictures of anything that catches my eye.

Like this cool car.

Or this really odd advertising person.

I can take pictures when I'm at the temple

and when I'm at the fabric store.

I used to see these window stickers on the back of minivans with stick-figure families on them.  I always laughed at them because they usually had a dad, a mom, and one or two children.  I wondered how our family would translate to a window sticker.  Well now I know (pretty close, anyway) and thanks to the purse camera so can you!  (I know you're delighted.)

The purse camera also comes in handy when I see beautiful flowers in Costco and am seized with  the desire to buy a bouquet and take them home with me so that I can spend the day taking pictures of them.  It was not a moment to spend an extra $15 on flowers, and so being able to take a picture while there eased the pain of not buying.  (No, I do not know what the other shoppers were thinking.  I was trying to be discreet!)

Lastly, having a purse cam allowed me to record this crime against Nature.  Every time I drive by this house I wonder what on earth these people are thinking?!?

Well that's all for now--I'm off to sew now.  Have a great Friday!

Did You Feel That???

Tonight as I drove home from church I heard an amazing fact on NPR.  Did you know that Saturday's earthquake in Chile actually moved the earth off of it's axis???

It's true.  NASA scientists reported that the earthquake shifted the earth off of it's axis almost 3 inches, which will shorten our days by about 1.26 microseconds.

Darn.  I wish it had moved in the other direction...

PS--The quake in Chile was the 5th strongest earthquake ever recorded.  Interestingly enough, the strongest earthquake ever recorded was also in Chile!

PPS--thank you Cindy Lynn for letting me know about my spelling mistake...It's obvious who is the speller in this family!
