Heavenly Messages

Last week I blogged about how afraid I’ve been of God’s plan for me, and about the experience of realizing that my heart had changed.  I’ve felt throughout this learning process that Heavenly Father has sent me little messages, messages to remind me that the purpose of his plan is to help me to learn and grow.

One of the first that I noticed came last spring in the Ensign, in an article by Elder Packer.  This sentence impacted me so strongly that for days and days I couldn’t turn the page.  I just left it in the same place, and every time I came back to it I read and re-read this quote.

Will this solve all your problems? Of course not! That would be contrary to the purpose of your coming into mortality. It will, however, give you a solid foundation on which to build your life…

That spoke to me so powerfully and at the same time optimistically.  Why would I want a situation that would be contrary to the purpose of my coming into mortality?

Then in the January Ensign there was this reminder.  First a quote from Elder Worthlin:

If we approach adversities wisely, our hardest times can be times of greatest growth, which in turn can lead toward times of greatest happiness.

and another from Elder Paul Johnson:

I guarantee that you will face challenges. That is part of mortality. It is expected. It is OK. In fact, it is necessary.

I don’t know why these little statements speak to me so profoundly and reassure me so much, but they do.  I think that maybe Heavenly Father is trying to etch this idea indelibly into my brain.

Last week when I opened a book a piece of paper fell out with a small paragraph written on it.  I’m not sure where it was from, but again the ideas resonated in my heart.

Do you learn from just reading the textbook, or do you need to apply what you’ve read in order to truly learn and integrate it?  [In order to move from knowledge to wisdom, which is the application of knowledge.]  Adversity provides the hands on experience that allows us to apply and practice the things we have previously only studied.

I do appreciate these divine messages being sprinkled so liberally into my life!

Sidebar Problems

I guess I didn't look at my blog thoroughly enough when I added that third sidebar.  Let's just say--if you're looking for titles of my last few posts in the sidebar on the right, you're going to have a hard time figuring them out!

Dental Conversations

Conversation from the dentist’s office the other day…

Dentist (who shares my love of travel): So Cindy, where’ve you been?

Me: I haven’t been on any trips, can you believe it?  But in May I’m going to Utah to help my little sister with her new twin boys.

Hygienist: Utah?  Aren’t you afraid of all of those cult people?

Me: uhhh…..

I am one of those cult people.

Dentist (to hygienist): I wouldn’t call Mormons a cult, not at all!  They’re fine people and good neighbors!

Hygienist (backpedaling furiously): Oh, I’m not talking about the Mormons, not at all!  I just thought there were some scary cult people in Utah!

Not exactly sure what she’s talking about…

Speaking of Tiger

Our funny cat sleeps in all sorts of places.  In the cold of winter she will sleep in the soft & warm cat bed.  But the rest of the time?  It’s anyone’s guess what will appeal to her, and what works today will not work tomorrow.  It may be the hard top of the freezer, a chair on the porch, or a pile of boards.

Russ told me to come out to the garage last night to check out her new bed.  I guess it beats the top of the lawn mower or a porch railing!

New Sidebar

I've been thinking for some time about adding something to my blog format, and I've finally done it.  (Inspired by Katy Crossley!!)  On the left I've added a sidebar that I'm going to record quotes in that are really meaningful to me.  It will make it easier for me to "see" them, and who knows--maybe there will be something meaningful for you as well!

Happy in the Sun

A little while ago I was busy ignoring some of my kids so that I could help one of the others.  I heard lots of laughing from the backyard and looked out to see this.  It warmed my heart.

I went out into the yard with my camera so that I could get more pictures.  They of course loved me to take their pictures while they were jumping.

They wanted to show me what a double bounce was.  I thought (but didn’t say) that I already knew what it was.  I also didn’t tell them that once when my sister and I were jumping together on our trampoline, she kicked me with her knee in the neck.  Which chipped several teeth, gave me a bit of amnesia, and made me talk in stereo for a week.

After this long, cold, gray winter (it’s all relative, people, and we know we are winter wimps!!!) we are so ready to enjoy the sun!

I Looked Out the Window and What Did I See?

Someone unexpected looking back at me…

February 2011 381

I’m not sure whether she was interested to see how we spend our days, or thinking she could get a bird from the window bird feeder.

And I have no idea how she got up there!!
