From Bathroom Blah to Tropical Spa

A couple of months ago I found myself in a fabric store holding a groupon that needed to be spent, and not being able to figure out what to buy.  Now this is not a normal state of being for me—it was akin to a kid in a candy shop deciding that he just wasn’t in the mood for candy.

Russ was afraid I was ill.

The next week I went back with the picture messaging activated on my cell phone and took pictures of different pieces of fabric and sent them to Cindy Lynn, who was in the hospital.  She picked out a fun piece of fabric for a skirt and I found a piece of fabric that intrigued me.

I wondered if I  could use it to make window shades for my bathroom.  Our master bathroom was one of the few places in our house that we hadn’t painted and fixed up.  Many years ago we stripped off the top layer of the wall border (because I hated it) but that was it.

It had very nice shades (nice= expensive, insulating) that matched the old wall border, but they did nothing for me.

So I bought a piece and took it home.  I had this idea that hanging in a window as a shade the fabric would interact with the light in an interesting way.  I was not disappointed.  It was like the lush tropical colors glowed.

Well.  Such beautiful shades as this fabric was going to make needed a total bathroom makeover.  (Which in my fantasies includes a whole new shower…to bad those fantasies didn’t work out!)  I started by taking my fabric to Lowes and buying a couple of paint samples.  The next day I went back and bought a few more.  Russ thought the 4th sample was just right, so I went with it.  (Later realizing that he was just desperate for me to stop buying paint samples!)

After I’d painted the whole bathroom (great way to prepare a talk!) and let the paint dry, I decided it was just too green for me.  So I took a bit of the sample paints and added a little more blue and messed with it a while.  I ended up dry brushing the bluer paint over the green paint, and I was happy with the way it turned out.  Here’s a picture with the contrast increased dramatically so you can see the texture.

Once the painting was done (trim too) I decided that we needed new towels and a new rug to match the new paint.  After 40 million trips to Kohls and Bed, Bath, and Beyond to buy lots of different towels and rugs, I finally found a combination that I liked.  Russ picked out the rug and I just love it.

Finally it was time to make the shades.  I decided I wanted the fabric to hang straight and flat when the shades were down, but to have a soft curve to them when they were pulled up.  It took a little experimenting and I am very happy with the finished look.  Here’s closed:

and open.  (I stitched this picture so that’s why it has a funny bend in it.)

I just love love LOVE them!  And instead of dreading having them shut when it’s cold outside, now I can look forward to seeing that beautiful tropical fabric with the light shining through it.

The last thing I did was put back up my whale picture

and my beach pictures

and then painted the light switch faceplate to match the wall.  It actually turned out pretty well.

So that’s the end of the bathroom remodel.  I love it in there now—it’s so lovely and peaceful!

Deconstructing “I Love You”

Love.

What an interesting word.  We all know what it means.  Until we’re asked for a definition…and then we really can’t articulate it.

It doesn’t help that the English language has just one word to convey the feelings and emotions that are conveyed by multiple words in other languages.  In Greek, for example, storge means the kind of natural affection that a parent would feel for their child.  Philia describes the love we have for a friend or a brother.  Eros refers to passionate or sensual love, and agape an unconditional love.

But us?  We just call it all “love.”

Recently a friend told me about an experiment she and her husband were conducting, and challenged me to try it too. Their experiment concerned the phrase “I love you” and it’s (many) meanings.  Instead of saying “I love you” to each other, they were trying to use more specific words to describe their feelings.

How interesting, I thought.  What do I mean when I say “I love you?”

I could see many different possibilities, and as I thought more about them I could see that sometimes my reasons for saying “I love you” are quite selfish.  How often did my “I love you” mean I like it when you do what I want you to do?  Much to my surprise my experience was quite different.  First I explained the experiment to Russ.  (Who thought it was a little silly, I’m sure.)  Then I started.

I love you, which means that I’m really glad I get to spend my life with you.

I love you, which means I’m so excited to see you when you come home every evening.

I love you, which means I love it when you laugh at my jokes.

I love you, which means I’m hot for your bod.  ;)

I love you, which means I think you’re such a wonderful father.

I love you, which means I love snuggling here with you every night.

And do you know what happened?  As I examined my thoughts and feelings to see beyond the generic “I love you,” to the specific thought I was trying to express, those feelings of love grew.  Almost as if identifying the specific feeling increased the amount of emotion that I was feeling in the first place…

I’m calling this experiment a total and complete success.

And I want to say, I love you Russ, which means I am so glad I was not Joe’s girlfriend…

Hanging out with these cuties…

Such fun!  Although if I am perfectly honest, I am glad that all of the exploding poop and vomit happened with the baby my brother-in-law was holding…

When The Cat's Away, The Mice Will Play

Post by Russ
A few weeks ago we were looking for a FHE activity and I jokingly said "mascara moustaches". Jenna latched on and every week she has said we need to do that activity. So while the mama cat is away, the mice broke into her makeup and made their moustaches (eye liner instead, it washes off easier).

Or maybe it is all the Mexican food we have been eating since she left....

Next Time I’m Flying Light (I Promise!)

I’m typing this as I sit in the airport in Chicago, tummy full of salad (too much dressing, ugh) and shoulders sore from lugging my stuff through the airport and onto the plane in Raleigh and then back off of the plane here.

Russ laughed when I carried my carry-on bag downstairs and picked up my laptop bag.  Every time I travel I vow that I’m going to pack less, and each next time I fail miserably.  Today I’m carrying my laptop (not because I wanted to use it on the plane, but because I didn’t want to check it) and an awesome bag I got at Goodwill for only $2!  Unfortunately my awesome Goodwill bag has about 5 books in it (I need to be able to read!  And what if I finish them all?!?), in addition to my purse and a water bottle, and it’s really heavy after I carry it for more than a minute.  And my laptop bag is always heavy.  Sore shoulders.

When I fly back in 2 weeks I need to be brave.  And maybe only fly with two books.  I’m pretty sure I can’t fly with just one, but maybe two…  And who knows, maybe I’ll get really brave and check my laptop.  (Russ says no because then it could get stolen…and I guess I don’t want that!)

I did do something today that made my life considerably easier.  I have to wear good shoes when I fly because my feet have never quite recovered from having triplets.  (Not that my feet had triplets…but they still suffered considerably because of the triplet experience.)  It’s always so annoying to have to pull them off in security, then stop and put them back on and tie the laces.  I decided to take a page from my ultra cool son Josh’s book.  He never ties his laces—instead he has them arranged and tucked in in such a way that his shoes don’t fall off of his feet but yet they slip right off and on.

Here are my shoes today,

April 2011 825 (very unflattering picture of my ankles—I assure you that while I may not have the most attractive ankles in the world, they look much better than that!)

and I am pleased to say that it worked like a charm.

I always think that flying is a modern miracle.  Take a metal tube full of people and lift it into the air, keep it there for hours and move it across the country at 300 miles per hour.  Isn’t technology amazing??
