How I almost died and the spirit spoke to me twice in one evening

Thursday morning last week I don't think I ate early enough, and after I ate it hurt so bad that I spent most of the morning lying on the couch.  (No computer, even.)  Russ has been super busy at work and so I asked him to meet me at Costco after work for a "date" and then we went out to dinner for my free birthday dinner @ IHOP.  (Free is a nice price.)  So we were at Costco walking around looking for the ziploc bags and we walked past this row that we never usually walk by.  I saw what was on the shelf there and thought "hm....that might help my stomach."  So I said to him, "Russ, we should buy some coconut water to see if it will help my stomach."  HOW RANDOM IS THAT?  Coconut water???  So we did, and when we got home and I googled it, there are lots of anecdotal reports of people using coconut water to help their gastritis.  I was a little surprised, and a lot laughing.  Here’s hoping it helps.  It tastes kind of nasty, but so far I’ve had some for 3 mornings and not had stomach pain for 3 days…

That night I was getting ready for bed and taking all of the stuff I take to keep from having hip pain while I'm sleeping.  You know, calcium, magnesium, potassium, all of my "ends in ium" minerals.  The calcium pills are always big, and this time the ones I got seem even bigger.  They are a full inch long and as big around as my pinky finger.  Normally I don't have a problem taking them but Thursday night I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and I was reading while I was taking them and for some reason, they got stuck in my throat going down.  Not in my mouth, but down farther than that.  It was a strange and unpleasant feeling.  Two things happened.  My brain panicked.  Like "There is a pill stuck in my throat, what am I going to do!!!"  I started drinking great big gulps of water trying to wash the pill out of my throat.  But at the same time another part of my brain said calmly, "I need to drink some hot water."  Now the thing is, in our new house hot water takes A LONG time to come to the sinks.  Seriously, we say 5 minutes though it's probably 3 minutes, but that really is a long time to wait for hot water.  So I turned on the hot water, and in the meantime I kept trying to drink a big enough mouthful of the cold water that it would wash the calcium pills down my throat.  That didn't work, and although I could still breathe fine (and I'm clueless enough about anatomy that I don’t know if it ever would have interfered with my breathing) I could feel the area around the stuck pill getting sore, and starting to tighten.  That was kind of scary and I started wondering if I was going to have to go to the emergency room again.  But in the back of my mind this thought said "I just need the warm water."  It was really starting to hurt and I was thinking that I'd better go tell Russ what was going on, when the water finally got hot.  I filled the glass, took a great big (hot) drink, and down the pills slid.  I was afraid to really trust it, so I took a couple more big drinks just to be sure.  And then I ignored the magnesium still waiting to be taken (I couldn't take any other pills that night!) and went to tell Russ about what had just happened.

I’m always so relieved when I realize that the spirit has been working in my life, and more importantly, that I’ve heard it.  Like “oh good, it’s still happening.”  I wonder if I’ll ever get past that…

I had a really lousy birthday

You know, I can’t remember the last time I really didn’t have a good day on my birthday.  But in the interest of keeping it real, I’m going to say that my birthday last week was not a good day.  It’s not like anything big & bad happened, I just felt lousy for a lot of the day.

Russ & Jared were on a campout and Rachel was so cute—days before she told me that she wanted to make me breakfast in bed.  Now I don’t actually like breakfast in my bed, but I told her that I would love breakfast in my bedroom.  She made my normal morning toast and scrambled me an egg, and you guessed it, it made my stomach hurt.  Then it was our morning to go and clean the church.  I could have gotten out of it because it was my birthday, but I figured I was only postponing the inevitable so I might as well go.  Later in the day I was really tired (from staying up too late because Russ was gone) and I laid down for a wonderful birthday nap, but there was just so much going on in the house that I couldn’t sleep well and instead of waking up feeling refreshed I just felt groggy and cranky.  My day ended with stomach pain as well.

I should note that there were more than a few nice moments on my birthday: my sweet girls made me breakfast, my sister in law called that morning to chat, cute cards from friends, Russ made steak, twice baked potatoes, and broccoli for my birthday dinner, and one of my friends sent a fun edible bouquet.  As I write these things down I realize that usually this would be more than enough things to make my birthday happy, but this year between the stomach pain and the tiredness they just didn’t.  Thank goodness there are 364 other days in the year, right?

My New Favorite Scripture

I came across this one recently and loved it:

“we were exceedingly rejoiced when we came to the seashore…”

Well of course!!

the Stomach Situation

Since this blog is meant to be a history of sorts for me, I thought I’d write a little about what’s going on with my stomach.  Feel free to ignore it.

I was really careful with what I ate for a couple of weeks after my lovely night in the ER.  After about two weeks I stopped taking the 2nd zantac (at dinner) and was still doing ok.  I even added back in some sugar and chocolate, though I was careful to avoid ibuprofen and caffeine.  (So sad—those are two of my favorite things, especially together.)  I had to be careful to keep food in my stomach, but things seemed to be ok.

And then came Thanksgiving.  The problems wasn’t so much from Thanksgiving dinner—I was careful, I didn’t eat too much, and I felt fine.  I think the problem started a few hours later when we had a meal made entirely of pie…way too much sugar for whatever it is that’s going on in my stomach.  My annual post-Thanksgiving pie breakfast just added insult to injury, and I spent the rest of the weekend with intermittent stomach pain.  By Sunday afternoon it was pretty bad and I spent the afternoon sitting in bed eating saltines.  Since then it’s been anyone’s guess.  I did learn with some certainty the other morning that hot sausage is not a good idea,  and earlier this week that fasting is not a good idea, but I felt terrible for several hours this morning and I have no clue why.  (Is 9:30 really too late to eat breakfast?)  All I can say is thank goodness for tums, and that I am glad that I have a good supply of percocet & phenergen should the need arise

It’s frustrating that there are no real answers.  There are not even easy tests to get real answers.  I could get a doctor to treat me for an ulcer based on symptoms, but at this point I’m not convinced that’s what it is, and I hate to take a bunch of antibiotics for no reason.  So for the time being I’ll just keep watching what I eat, and paying attention to what seems to make me feel bad, and hope like crazy that it never gets completely out of control again like it did before.

Using what you’ve got…

I was looking for the girls this afternoon and heard something from the garage.  When I went and looked out the laundry room door there was Rachel, singing Christmas songs at the top of her lungs with her ears plugged.  When I finally got her attention and asked her what she was doing, she said that she & Jenna were playing hide & seek.  I looked up and sure enough, there was Jenna perched up on one of the stacks of boxes…hopefully they didn’t break anything!

We’ve reached a kind of equilibrium in the house…most things have a place that they belong now, but it’s been so stressful getting to this point that I’m kind of afraid to bring anything else in.  We’ve lived without all of this stuff with so long that part of me thinks that it can just stay out there…but the garage is completely unusable this way, and eventually we will want our books and tools and fabric and at least some of the other stuff…what a work in progress.
